For some people, starting a savings is a challenge in itself. If you like impulse buying, then this is a bigger problem. With each purchase you make you are preventing money from going into your savings account. But is there a way for you to curb your shopping urges?

How to stop impulse buying?

Impulse buying is a bad money habit you need to break. But as they say: “bad habits are hard to break.” You don’t have to give it up cold turkey. There are ways for you to stop yourself from spending way too much on items. Here are some of these ways:

Stay away

“Out of sight, out of mind.” If you stay away from online shopping websites and stores, you can keep your impulse purchases in check.

When going on walks, choose a route with fewer shops like a residential area. That way, you can’t be tempted to swing by the shops. But if a walk through the local shopping centre is inevitable, make sure you don’t have your credit/debit card and only have enough money in your wallet for the day. Doing any of these should help you deter the urge for impulse buying.

Take inventory of the things at home

A lot of people tend to overlook how much stuff they already have at home. So, it’s a good idea to take the time to look over all of the items in your home. That includes going over your clothes, household items, and other miscellaneous things.

You can then sort out your items to get rid of the old ones while taking note of the ones you use daily. This way, you can have a better idea on what you already have to prevent yourself from needlessly re-buying items.

Be grateful

There will be times where you find yourself pining for the shoes you saw online. Instead of using that energy to long for something meaningless, redirect it towards gratitude. Think about all the items you do have and can use at your leisure and be grateful that you already have it.

When you’re grateful for everything in your life, there won’t be a need to fill the void in your heart with impulse buying.

Give yourself at least 24 hours

When you find something you want to buy, give yourself some time before acting on the urge. You can give yourself a minimum of 24 hours before making a final decision, or even a week.

That way, you will be given time to reassess your priorities and ask yourself the question: “do I need it?”

Consider your cost vs. labour

It’s easy to spend your money when you don’t stop to think how you pay for it. The next time you see something you want to buy, think about how many work hours it’s going to take to pay for the item in question.

When you realise that it’s going to take an entire day’s work to pay for it, it makes you not to want to make the purchase.

Failure is inevitable the first time you try to change your habits. But it is up to you to try again and head towards a new life of spending.
