How to save money when shopping online

By: Louise Mosqueda0 comments

These days, you can get just about anything online. From used sweaters for your kids to car loan applications, everything is just a click away.

Services like Amazon and people using social media as a way to sell their used items, buying and selling online has become more accessible than ever.

It’s so easy in fact that you can end up spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars within just a few hours.

Don’t spend all of your money in one place. Instead, learn how you can get the best deals for each item you put in your virtual shopping cart. Here are a few tips to help you get going:

Use your wishlist

Most online retailers like Amazon have a wishlist. When you see something you like but aren’t sure if you want to buy it yet, you put it here. That way, you can keep tabs on it for as long as you want.

Aside from that, putting an item on your wishlist and keeping your account logged in can trigger email alerts informing you if the thing on your list has gotten a discount.

It’s a great way to save money when you finally decide to buy the item or an excellent incentive for waiting before pulling the trigger.

Promo codes

If you’re on the internet a lot, you will notice sellers giving out promo codes to their items through their social media pages. Some even send them through emails.

A promo code is a lot like a coupon: you use it to unlock savings. You can wait for the sellers to release them, or you can look online to find them yourself, in case vendors aren’t feeling generous. You can usually find them on websites like Groupon, retailmenot, and

Plan your purchases according to the season

Another way to get the best deals is to shop for items past their season. For example: if you need to replace your lawn furniture, but it isn’t a priority just yet, consider buying for it later in the year when the weather is colder.

Retailers are known to drop prices significantly on specific items like outdoor equipment during autumn, where you can get your replacement furniture at a better price. This way, you’ll be all set for the warmer weather once the new year rolls around.

Download the app

A lot of retailers have their own apps to make online shopping more accessible to the population. Now, a lot of people think that downloading the app is a waste of time, especially if they can just get on their computer and navigate it from there.

What they don’t know is that shopping from the smartphone app can open up new doors that are not accessible through the browser. That includes discounts and in some cases, offer free shipping.

So, if you’re a frequent buyer at a particular online shop, download their app and enjoy the perks that come with it.

Earlier, we mentioned that keeping items in your wishlist can trigger alerts on price drops and sales. The downside is that all those alerts are only for the items on the list.

Now, if you want to be in the know for when the retailer makes a store-wide sale, you can sign up for their email alerts so you can be one of the first people to know about it. Fair warning, however, that this can get spammy overtime. To counter this, consider using a separate email account from your regular one.

Avoid shipping fees

Lastly, avoid shipping fees. Some stores offer free shipping when you shop from them and reach a total price above $200 or more. You can take advantage of that, or you can ask to meet up with the person to get the item, pay them in cash, and be on your way.

If you try out some if not all of these tips, you can guarantee yourself some serious savings one way or another. So, keep these in mind the next time you want to go window shopping online, and you might just score a great deal you could’ve missed.
